Beware of putting too much emphasis, as many people do, on the accreditation program. You’re not training for the sake of training; this is about employment. Focus on the end-goal.

It’s common, in many cases, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying only to end up putting 20 long years into a job you hate, as an upshot of not doing some decent due-diligence at the outset.

It’s essential to keep your focus on what you want to achieve, and then build your training requirements around that – don’t do it the other way round. Stay on target and ensure that you’re training for a career you’ll still be enjoying many years from now.

Seek guidance and advice from an experienced professional, even if there’s a fee involved – it’s considerably cheaper and safer to find out at the start whether a chosen track will suit, instead of discovering after two full years that you aren’t going to enjoy the job you’ve chosen and have to start from the beginning again.

Workshop days are often sold as a major benefit by many training schools. When you talk to most IT trainees who have used them, you’ll likely realise that they’ve now become a mistake due to many reasons:

* Many back and forth visits – usually hundreds of miles each and every time.

* If you work for a living, then Mon-Fri events are difficult to make. You’re usually having to deal with several days in a row too.

* At only 4 weeks off each year, using half of that on training workshops leaves us with very few opportunities for days off.

* With the high costs involved, a lot of schools have to put on larger classes – which is not ideal (increasing the ratio of students to teachers).

* Tension can run high in mixed classes because most students want to move at a pace comfortable for them.

* Add up the cost of all the travel, fares, parking, food and accommodation and you may be surprised (and not pleasantly). Attendees mention extra costs ranging from hundreds to over a thousand pounds. Sit down and add it up – then you’ll know.

* Do you really want the chance of letting yourself be ignored for potential advancement or wage increases just because you’re retraining.

* Asking questions around our class-mates will often make us feel uncomfortable. Have you ever left a question un-asked because you didn’t want to appear stupid?

* There are those of us who at times work or live away part of the time, think of the now-increased trouble of reaching the necessary classes, as time becomes even more scarce.

Doesn’t it make so much more sense to study when it’s convenient for you – not the company – and utilise interactive videos of instructors teaching a class.

If anything comes up, get onto the live 24×7 support (that should’ve been packaged with any technical type of training.) Bear in mind, if you have a laptop, you can study wherever you want.

It doesn’t matter how often you feel you need to repeat something, filmed instructors will never get annoyed or frustrated! And don’t forget, in this situation, you can say goodbye to note-taking. It’s all there for immediate use.

What could be more straightforward: Time and money is saved and travelling is avoided altogether; and of course you end up with a more comfortable study environment.

In total, there are 4 A+ examinations and study sections, but your only requirement is to get certified in 2 to be thought of as qualified. Because of this, a great number of colleges restrict their course to just 2 areas. But allowing you to learn about all 4 options will give you a far greater perspective of your subject, which you’ll find vital in the working environment.

Passing the A+ exam on its own will mean that you’re able to repair and fix computers and Macs; ones that are most often not part of a network – essentially the domestic or small business sector.

If you’re considering being someone who works for a larger company – in network support, build on A+ with Network+, or follow the Microsoft route – MCP’s, MCSA or MCSE in order to have a wider knowledge of how networks work.

A study programme should always lead to a nationally (or globally) recognised qualification at the finale – not a useless ‘in-house’ printed certificate to hang in your hallway.

To an employer, only the top companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco (for instance) will get you short-listed. Nothing else will cut the mustard.

Get rid of any salesperson that just tells you what course you should do without an in-depth conversation to assess your abilities as well as level of experience. Make sure they can draw from a generous range of products so they’re actually equipped to give you an appropriate solution.

Where you have a strong background, or maybe some live experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then it could be that your starting level will be very different from a student that is completely new to the industry.

If this is going to be your first effort at studying for an IT examination then you may want to begin with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first.

Considering the amount of options that are available, it’s not really surprising that nearly all trainees don’t really understand the best career path they will follow.

Perusing lists of IT career possibilities is no use whatsoever. Surely, most of us have no concept what our own family members do for a living – let alone understand the ins and outs of a particular IT career.

Ultimately, the right resolution really only appears from a meticulous study across many changing factors:

* What hobbies you’re involved with in your spare-time – these can define what areas you’ll get the most enjoyment out of.

* Do you hope to accomplish a specific aspiration – for instance, working from home in the near future?

* Where do you stand on travelling time and locality vs salary?

* Because there are so many ways to train in computing – you’ll need to get a solid grounding on what differentiates them.

* Having a good look at how much time and effort that you’re going to put into it.

The bottom line is, the best way of understanding everything necessary is by means of a meeting with someone that knows the industry well enough to give you the information required.

Look at the following facts and pay great regard to them if you believe the marketing blurb about a guarantee for your exam looks like a reason to buy:

Patently it’s not free – you are paying for it – the price has simply been included in the whole thing.

The honest truth is that when trainees fund their relevant examinations, one by one, they will be much more likely to get through on the first attempt – as they are conscious of the cost and will therefore apply themselves appropriately.

Why should you pay your training course provider at the start of the course for exam fees? Find the best deal you can at the time, rather than coughing up months or even a year or two in advance – and do it in a local testing centre – rather than possibly hours away from your area.

Big margins are secured by a number of companies that get money for exam fees in advance. A number of students don’t take them for various reasons but the company keeps the money. Believe it or not, there are training companies who rely on that fact – as that’s how they make a lot of their profit.

Many training companies will require you to sit pre-tests and prohibit you from re-taking an exam until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – making an ‘exam guarantee’ just about worthless.

Exam fees averaged about 112 pounds in the last 12 months via VUE or Pro-metric centres in the UK. So why pay hundreds or thousands of pounds extra for ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when common sense dictates that the responsible approach is a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools.

Everybody is busy these days, and most often if we desire to learn a new profession, getting educated in addition to a 40 hour week is what we’re faced with. Microsoft certified training could be the answer.

Maybe you’d choose to find advisors with experience of the IT industry, who can give you some ideas on which area of the industry would suit you most, and the kind of responsibilities that are appropriate for a person with your personality.

Be sure your training course is tailored to your needs and abilities. The best companies will ensure that your training track is designed for the job you want to get.

Those that are drawn to this type of work can be very practical by nature, and don’t always take well to classrooms, and slogging through piles of books. If this is putting you off studying, go for more modern interactive training, where everything is presented via full motion video.

Learning psychology studies show that much more of what we learn in remembered when we involve as many senses as possible, and we put into practice what we’ve been studying.

Locate a program where you’ll get a host of CD and DVD ROM’s – you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, and be able to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.

All companies should willingly take you through a few examples of the materials provided for study. Make sure you encounter videos of instructor-led classes and many interactive sections.

Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. You want physical CD/DVD ROM course materials where possible, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – you don’t want to be reliant on your broadband being ‘up’ 100 percent of the time.

Sometimes people presume that the state educational track is still the most effective. Why then are commercial certificates becoming more popular with employers?

Corporate based study (in industry terminology) is far more specialised and product-specific. Industry has realised that specialisation is what’s needed to service the demands of a technologically complex world. Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA are the key players in this arena.

In a nutshell, only that which is required is learned. It’s not quite as straightforward as that, but the most important function is always to cover the precise skills needed (along with a certain amount of crucial background) – without trying to cram in everything else – in the way that academic establishments often do.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the label’. Companies need only to know what areas need to be serviced, and then request applicants with the correct exam numbers. That way they can be sure they’re interviewing applicants who can do the job.

Don’t get hung-up, as a lot of students can, on the certification itself. Training is not an end in itself; this is about employment. Begin and continue with the end in mind.

It’s a terrible situation, but thousands of new students begin programs that seem fabulous from the syllabus guide, but which delivers a career that is of no interest at all. Try talking to typical university leavers for examples.

You must also consider what your attitude is towards earning potential and career progression, and whether you intend to be quite ambitious. It’s vital to know what (if any) sacrifices you’ll need to make for a particular role, what particular accreditations will be required and how to develop your experience.

Seek advice from an experienced industry professional, even if you have to pay a small fee – it’s much safer and cheaper to investigate at the start if you’ve chosen correctly, instead of discovering after 2 years that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and have to return to the start of another program.

The somewhat scary thought of securing your first computer related job is often made easier by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance facility. The honest truth is that it isn’t so complicated as you might think to land your first job – as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

It’s not unusual to find that you will get your initial position whilst still on the course (even when you’ve just left first base). If your CV doesn’t show your latest training profile (and it hasn’t been posted on jobsites) then you’re not even going to be known about!

Actually, an independent and specialised local recruitment consultant or service (who will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you) should get better results than any sector of a centralised training facility. It also stands to reason that they’ll know local industry and the area better.

In a nutshell, if you put the same amount of effort into getting a position as into training, you won’t find it too challenging. Some students strangely spend hundreds of hours on their learning program and then call a halt once they’ve passed their exams and seem to expect employers to find them.
